Fashion Designer from Suriname: Carina Poleon

Carina Poleon is a woman who breathes art and passion. From her beginnings at fashion school to her internships at the prestigious fashion houses of Givenchy and Chanel in Paris, her life has been marked by a relentless pursuit of beauty and innovation. Upon her return to Suriname in 2013, Floh-Jo was born –a brand that masterfully blends the rich cultural tapestry of Africa, Europe, and South America.

Inspired by the diverse materials that surround her, Carina artfully combines vibrant African fabrics like Bogolan from Mali and wax-printed textiles from Senegal with Moroccan furniture and Togolese weaves, juxtaposing them with Dutch leather and European fabrics. She also incorporates indigenous Surinamese materials, creating a symphony of textures and colors in every piece.

Her unique style is instantly recognizable, fusing vintage textiles like denim with handcrafted crochet details. Her work has inspired many to explore the world of crochet, breathing new life into this traditional technique in Suriname.

Carina’s personal hallmark. This symbol reflects the essence of her creations. Her workshop, nestled in her bird-filled courtyard, is an oasis of creativity where the designer lovingly crafts each piece with joy and happiness. “My designs radiate joy, just like the birds that surround me. Every creation is unique, just like every person,” Carina states.

Poleon is a testament to resilience. For eight years, she lived with an eye blinded by an infection. During that time, she began designing and creating Floh-Jo. She persevered through two corneal transplants, one unsuccessful and the other successful, which restored her sight four years ago. “Now I can enjoy life, design and create –it’s my celebration!,” Carina exclaims with a contagious smile. Her creative energy extends beyond fabrics and threads, inspiring everyone to live life with passion and chase their dreams regardless of obstacles.

Carina reminds us that beauty knows no bounds, that creativity can bloom in the most challenging times, and that the joy of living lies in the passion to create.
