On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of Independence of Saint Kitts and Nevis

As I reflect upon the 40th year of Independence of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and pride. This significant milestone is not only a celebration of our nation’s journey, but also a reminder of the incredible progress we have made in the past four decades.

Since gaining Independence on the 19th of September, 1983, Saint Kitts and Nevis has made remarkable strides on the global stage. We have become a shining example of what can be achieved when the hearts of our people beat to the rhythm of their nation. The theme for our 40th Independence Anniversary "Growing Sustainably, Developing Maturely, Building Resiliency: Independence 40," encapsulates the core values and aspirations of our twin island state. On this Independence Anniversary, we recommit ourselves to the construction of our twin island nation, which continues to be a work in progress. We acknowledge our successes: free education, free healthcare for the vulnerable, tremendous growth of our tourism and cultural industries, reduction in student loans, launch of new housing initiatives, heavy investments in social programmes geared at poverty alleviation and our advances in renewable energy.

Saint Kitts and Nevis is among the best performing economies in Latin America and the Caribbean. According to the World Bank 2022 National Accounts data, we have the highest GDP per capita in CARICOM excluding our good friends from The Bahamas. We are among the best performers on the 2021 United Nations Human Development Index, ranking at 75 out of 191 countries and territories. On the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index for 2022, our Federation is rated as number one in the OECS and number 39 of 140 countries. These are but some examples of areas in which we have been outperforming our peers.

We do not just smile at our achievements; we are also sensitive to our disappointments and recognise the myriad challenges with which we are confronted. As a people, our eyes remain open and in spite of our shortcomings, we are resolute in our mission to achieve together. We strive to rebuild a resilient post-pandemic recovery to ensure rapid sustainable economic growth, to create more jobs and opportunities for our youth, which will set them on a path to financial independence and wealth creation; we are taking urgent action to stamp out crime and violence in our communities. The Government is seeking to reduce inflation by investing in our agriculture and fishing sector to boost food security.

One of our priorities has always been to ensure that our citizens have access to quality education by providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world. As such, the government has dedicated significant resources and initiatives to ensure the scholastic development of our nation. The provision of free tuition for all students of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College and the back-to-school voucher initiative are concrete examples of our commitment to empowering our youth through education. By easing the financial burden on parents and guardians, we are enabling greater access to quality education for all, and fostering a generation of skilled and knowledgeable individuals who will drive our country forward.

We must recognize that in order for our nation to move forward, the development of our youths is critical. Therefore, it is more important now than ever, to equip them with the necessary skills to forge a prosperous future for our twin island state. The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has placed youth development at the forefront of our national priorities, recognizing that investing in the potential of our young people is an investment in the long-term success and sustainability of our nation.

In addition to education, we must also highlight the importance of healthcare in building a strong and resilient nation. The well-being of our citizens is not limited to their physical health, but it encompasses their mental state as well. Thus, to ensure the stability and prosperity of our nation, we must provide holistic healthcare services that address both aspects of our citizens’ well-being, which in turn fosters a society that is empowered, resilient, and ready to overcome any obstacle that may arise. We take pride in knowing that our healthcare system is built upon the principles of inclusivity and accessibility; and is deeply rooted in a culture of prioritizing the well-being of each and every individual.

Another element that we have included in our sustainable growth is our tourism sector. The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has taken the necessary steps to embrace sustainable practices relative to our tourism industry that have not only contributed to our economic development, but has also served to epitomize the natural beauty of our twin-island Federation, steeped in history and cultural richness.

Finally, our urban development initiatives have transformed our landscape into vibrant, inclusive spaces, offering our citizens and visitors alike an unparalleled quality of life. Under my leadership, we have crafted the Sustainable Island State Agenda of Saint Kitts and Nevis, founded on seven key pillars. Among these pillars are Food Security, Green Energy Transition, Economic Diversification, Sustainable Industries, the Creative Economy, COVID-19 Recovery, and Social Protection. It is my unwavering mission to ensure that these goals are not merely aspirations, but that they are turned into palpable achievements that will pave the way for a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation.

While the Federation celebrates its achievements during these last 40 years, we are also thrilled to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of establishment of our very own regional intergovernmental institution: CARICOM. We have both come a long way together and we commend their leadership and prudent steering of the community’s activities during the last half century. Together with CARICOM, we labour to further improve our country and lay a firm foundation on which our nation’s youth can continue to build resilient futuristic structures that will support our sustainable growth
and development.

Having personally studied in Cuba, I can attest to the incredible strength and unwavering resolve of the Cuban people, in the face of adversities caused by external forces. The collaboration between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Cuba has yielded tangible benefits for both countries, and we are truly grateful for the enduring friendship and cooperation that we share.

In conclusion, for this, the 40th year of Independence for the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, we must rejoice in the progress we have made and use it as a stepping stone to an even brighter future. It is through sustainable growth, mature¡ development, resilient building and mutual relationships that we will continue to uphold our independence and uplift our nation. Together, let us forge ahead, united as one, to create a legacy that future generations will be proud to inherit.

Reflexionar sobre el 40º aniver- sario de la Independencia de la Federación de San Cristóbal y Nieves, me llena de gratitud y orgullo. Este hito significativo no es solo una celebración del viaje de nuestra nación, sino también un recordatorio del increíble progreso que hemos logrado en las últimas cuatro décadas. Desde que obtuvimos la indepen- dencia el 19 de septiembre de 1983, San Cristóbal y Nieves ha dado grandes pasos en el escenario mundial. Nos hemos convertido en un brillante ejemplo de lo que se puede lograr cuando los corazones de nuestra gente laten al ritmo de su nación. El tema de nuestro 40º Aniversario de Independencia, “Creciendo de manera Soste- nible, Desarrollándonos Madura- mente, Construyendo Resiliencia: Independencia 40", encapsula los valores fundamentales y las aspiraciones de nuestro estado insular gemelo.

En este aniversario de nuestra independencia, nos comprometemos nuevamente a la construcción de nuestra nación insular gemela, que sigue siendo un trabajo en progreso. Reconocemos nuestros éxitos: educación gratuita, atención médica gratuita para los vulnerables, un crecimiento tremendo en nuestras industrias turísticas y culturales, reducción de préstamos estudiantiles, lanzamiento de nuevas iniciativas de vivienda, fuertes inversiones en programas sociales orientados a la reducción de la pobreza y nuestros avances en energía renovable.

San Cristóbal y Nieves se encuentra entre las economías con mejor desempeño en América Latina y el Caribe. Según los datos de cuentas nacionales del Banco Mundial de 2022, tenemos el PIB per cápita más alto en la Comunidad del Caribe (CARICOM), excluyendo a nuestros buenos amigos de Las Bahamas. Estamos entre los mejores clasificados en el Índice de Desarrollo Humano de las Naciones Unidas de 2021, ocupando el puesto 75 de 191 países y territorios. En el Índice del Estado de Derecho del Proyecto Mundial de Justicia para 2022, nuestra Federación está clasificada como número uno en la OECS y número 39 de 140 países. Estos son solo algunos ejemplos de áreas en las que hemos superado a nuestros pares.

No solo sonreímos ante nuestros logros; también somos sensibles a nuestras decepciones y reconocemos los numerosos desafíos que enfrentamos. Como pueblo, mantenemos los ojos abiertos y, a pesar de nuestras deficiencias, estamos resueltos en nuestra misión de conseguir logros juntos. Nos esforzamos por reconstruir una recuperación resiliente, posterior a la pandemia, para garantizar un crecimiento económico sostenible rápido, crear más empleos y oportunidades para nuestros jóvenes, que los encamine hacia la independencia financiera y la creación de riqueza. Estamos tomando medidas urgentes para erradicar la delincuencia y la violencia en nuestras comunidades. El Gobierno busca reducir la inflación invirtiendo en nuestro sector agrícola y pesquero para impulsar la seguridad alimentaria.

Una de nuestras prioridades siempre ha sido asegurarnos de que nuestros ciudadanos tengan acceso a una educación de calidad, proporcionándoles las herramientas necesarias para tener éxito en un mundo que cambia rápidamente. Como tal, el gobierno ha dedicado recursos significativos e iniciativas para garantizar el desarrollo escolar de nuestra nación. La provisión de matrícula gratuita para todos los estudiantes del Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College y la iniciativa de vales de regreso a clases son ejemplos concretos de nuestro compromiso de empoderar a nuestros jóvenes a través de la educación. Al aliviar la carga financiera de los padres y tutores, estamos permitiendo un mayor acceso a una educación de calidad para todos y fomentando una generación de individuos hábiles y conocedores que impulsarán nuestro país hacia adelante.

Debemos reconocer que para que nuestra nación avance, el desarrollo de nuestros jóvenes es fundamental. Por lo tanto, es más importante ahora que nunca equiparlos con las habilidades necesarias para forjar un futuro próspero para nuestro estado insular gemelo. El Gobierno de San Cristóbal y Nieves ha situado el desarrollo juvenil en primera línea de nuestras prioridades nacionales, reconociendo que invertir en el potencial de nuestros jóvenes es una inversión en el éxito a largo plazo y la sostenibilidad de nuestra nación.

Además de la educación, también debemos resaltar la importancia de la atención médica en la construcción de una nación fuerte y resiliente. El bienestar de nuestros ciudadanos no se limita a su salud física, sino que también abarca su estado mental. Por lo tanto, para garantizar la estabilidad y la prosperidad de nuestra nación, debemos proporcionar servicios de atención médica integrales que aborden ambos aspectos del bienestar de nuestros ciudadanos, lo que a su vez fomenta una sociedad empoderada, resiliente y lista para superar cualquier obstáculo que pueda surgir. Nos enorgullece saber que nuestro sistema de atención médica se basa en los principios de inclusión y accesibilidad, y está profundamente arraigado en una cultura que prioriza el bienestar de cada individuo.

Otro elemento que hemos incluido en nuestro crecimiento sostenible es nuestro sector turístico. El Gobierno de San Cristóbal y Nieves ha tomado las medidas necesarias para abrazar prácticas sostenibles en relación con nuestra industria turística que no solo han contribuido a nuestro desarrollo económico, sino que también han servido para personalizar la belleza natural de nuestra Federación insular gemela, rica en historia y cultura.

Finalmente, nuestras iniciativas de desarrollo urbano han transformado nuestro paisaje en espacios vibrantes e inclusivos, ofreciendo a nuestros ciudadanos y visitantes una calidad de vida incomparable.

Bajo mi liderazgo, hemos creado la Agenda del Estado Insular Sostenible de San Cristóbal y Nieves, basada en siete pilares clave. Entre ellos se encuentran la Seguridad Alimentaria, la Transición a la Energía Verde, la Diversificación Económica, las Industrias Sostenibles, la Economía Creativa, la Recuperación del COVID-19 y la Protección Social. Mi misión inquebrantable es asegurar que estos objetivos no sean solo aspiraciones, sino que se conviertan en logros palpables que allanarán el camino hacia un futuro próspero.
