Ambassador of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the Republic of Cuba for the 40th Anniversary of Independence of Saint Kitts and Nevis

Forty years ago, on September 19, 1983, the world awoke to the birth of a new independent nation, who dared to break free from the shackles of colonialism and exploitation.

The architects of Saint Kitts and Nevis, having dreamed of our political and economic independence, initiated the groundwork to navigate the high tides and the channels, which led to the fountains of sovereignty, self-determination and a better future for our people.

Our achievements over the years are testament to the vision and unwavering commitment of our people.

We have advanced significantly towards creating a sustainable and prosperous society in areas such as education, healthcare, tourism, and urban development. With vision, commitment and hard work, there is no limit to what can be achieved in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

So, in the face of fear, we bring courage; in the absence of hope, we show love; and to the sound of ‘No’, we respond with an emphatic “Yes”; because we believe in our collective dreams, we nurture and invest in our children so that they may have a brighter future, and we are convinced that we are taking the right steps to set our country on a path towards a sustainable future.

We value our relationship and involvement with our Caribbean brothers and sisters and we continue to join hands with them as we celebrate 50 years of establishment of CARICOM, the longest movement of its kind in the developing world.

Earlier this year, on May 10th, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Cuba celebrated the 28th Anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations. During these years, we have deepened our friendship and expanded on areas of cooperation: agriculture, sports, health and human resource training and development.

We work together not just on the bilateral front but also in the multilateral arena on issues such as regional integration, climate change, agriculture and food security, the blue economy, sustainable development, trade and commerce, economic development and health, among others.

Saint Kitts and Nevis continues to use its voice to advocate for an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba. We believe that it is only in working together as equals that we will be able to surmount our challenges and achieve our common goals.

Today, our hearts beam with joy, confidence and pride as we reflect on where we have been, where we are now and where we are heading under the theme: “Growing Sustainably, Developing Maturely, Building Resiliency: Independence 40.” Let us continue to work jointly to consolidate our democracy and to making our indelible mark in technology and in the international community!

Happy Independence to Saint Kitts and Nevis and May God continue to bless our nation and grant us hope, serenity and love for many years to come!

Mensaje de la Excma. Sra. Verna Mills, Embajadora de San Cristóbal y Nieves en la República de Cuba por el 40° Aniversario de la Independencia de San Cristóbal y Nieves

Hace cuarenta años, el 19 de septiembre de 1983, el mundo despertó al nacimiento de una nueva nación independiente, que se atrevió a liberarse de las cadenas del colonialismo y la explotación.

Los arquitectos de San Cristóbal y Nieves, habiendo soñado con nuestra independencia política y económica, iniciaron los cimientos para navegar por las mareas altas y los canales que llevaron a las fuentes de la soberanía, la autodeterminación y un futuro mejor para nuestro pueblo.

Nuestros logros a lo largo de los años son testimonio de la visión y el compromiso inquebrantable de nuestro pueblo. Hemos avanzado significativamente hacia la creación de una sociedad sostenible y próspera en áreas como la educación, la atención médica, el turismo y el desarrollo urbano.

Con visión, compromiso y trabajo duro, no hay límites para lo que se puede lograr en San Cristóbal y Nieves. Entonces, ante el miedo, traemos valor; en ausencia de esperanza, mostramos amor; y al sonido del ‘No’, respondemos con un enfático “Sí”; porque creemos en nuestros sueños colectivos, nutrimos e invertimos en nuestros hijos para que tengan un futuro más brillante, y estamos convencidos de que estamos tomando los pasos correctos para encaminar a nuestro país hacia un futuro sostenible.

Valoramos nuestra relación y participación con nuestros hermanos y hermanas caribeños y seguimos uniendo fuerzas con ellos mientras celebramos los 50 años de la creación de la CARICOM, el movimiento de integración más largo de su tipo en el mundo en desarrollo.

A principios de este año, el 10 de mayo, San Cristóbal y Nieves y Cuba celebraron el 28º Aniversario del establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas. Durante estos años, hemos fortalecido nuestra amistad y hemos aplicado áreas de cooperación: agricultura, deportes, salud y capacitación y desarrollo de recursos humanos.

Trabajamos juntos no solo en el ámbito bilateral, sino también en la arena multilateral en cuestiones como la integración regional, el cambio climático, la agricultura y la seguridad alimentaria, la economía azul, el desarrollo sostenible, el comercio y el intercambio, el desarrollo económico y la salud, entre otros.

San Cristóbal y Nieves continúa utilizando su voz para abogar por el fin del embargo económico, comercial y financiero impuesto por los Estados Unidos de América contra Cuba. Creemos que solo trabajando juntos como iguales podremos superar nuestros desafíos y alcanzar nuestros objetivos comunes.

Hoy, nuestros corazones brillan de alegría, confianza y orgullo mientras reflexionamos sobre dónde hemos estado, dónde estamos ahora y hacia dónde nos dirigimos. Celebramos el aniversario de este año bajo el lema: Creciendo de manera Sostenible, Desarrollándonos Maduramente, Construyendo Resiliencia: Independencia 40. ¡Sigamos trabajando juntos para consolidar nuestra democracia y dejar nuestra huella indeleble en la tecnología y en la comunidad internacional!

¡Feliz Independencia a San Cristóbal y Nieves y que Dios continúe bendiciendo nuestra nación y otorgándonos esperanza, serenidad y amor por muchos años por venir!
