Guyanese designer extraordinaire Sonia Noel has been fascinated by fashion since childhood.
Her earliest memories are filled with creating miniature worlds, transforming newspapers into dolls, dresses, and turbans for her friends. Her natural design talent blossomed at the young age of 11 when she created her first outfit for a local competition in her hometown of Bartica. This early success, coupled with the influence of her seamstress mother and fashionista aunt, laid the foundation for a remarkable career spanning a quarter of a century.
Her creativity draws sustenance from the beauty that surrounds her. Nature, the people who inspire her, inspiring words, and prayer are inexhaustible sources for her art. Sonia transforms the everyday into works of art, weaving a legacy of color and empowerment.
Recently, this talented fashion designer received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States National Commission for UNESCO Clubs at the United Nations 79th General Assembly. She also concluded her “Conversations and Clothing with Sonia Noel” tour, showcasing her new Tie Dye collection not only in the Caribbean but also in major cities in the United States like New York, Miami, and Atlanta. She has been invited to speak at a number of events including the BRICS Fashion Summit, Capital Hill, and Brown University.
Today, Sonia Noel has become a fashion icon, not only for her vibrant designs inspired by Caribbean culture, but also for her message of empowerment. Her work transcends the runways, reaching countless people through her books, lectures, and personal development programs.
“It’s about inner and outer beauty,” she tells this magazine. “I am grateful for my journey because it allows me to interact with people and help them live fulfilling lives,” she concluded.
