Belize and Cuba, 29 years of magnificent relations

This Monday, Cuba and Belize celebrate 29 years of relations, characterized by collaboration in different spheres, friendship and brotherhood, both between both governments and peoples.

The ties between the two parties date back to July 15, 1995, when an agreement was signed for the establishment of diplomatic relations between both states, which is considered a historic moment in the strengthening of ties of friendship and cooperation between the respective governments and people.

A statement released by the Cuban embassy in Belmopan mentions different actions that mark those links and expresses the island's gratitude for Belize's support in aspects as important as the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, after the large fire at the Matanzas Supertankers base and later the passage of the powerful hurricane through the largest of the Antilles, as well as the global demand to end the illegal and unjust economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America on Cuba.

Later he refers to Cuban medical collaboration in that country, where more than 1,000 Cuban collaborators have provided their services since 1990 in the areas of health, sport, construction and culture, while adding that currently 88 health professionals work together with their Belizean brothers in all districts of the country.

He also adds that more than 250 young Belizeans have been trained as professionals in Cuba in the areas of health, sports, technical and pedagogical sciences. Regarding this anniversary, the information recalls that during the official visit to Cuba made on April 27, 2022, Prime Minister John Briceño and President Miguel Díaz-Canel, signed a statement that expresses the will of both states to continue strengthening their bilateral ties in various spheres and historical relations were ratified between our people and governments.

In turn, he mentioned that during the official visit of President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first of a Cuban president to that nation on February 12 of last year, he expressed: “If something has distinguished our bilateral relations, it is that they have transcended formalities of diplomatic relations to become links of truly brotherly peoples.”

Today we celebrate the 29th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Belize, which constitute an example of friendship and cooperation, demonstrating what brotherly peoples can achieve when they respect and complement each other, the statement concludes.
