Caricom welcomes Curacao as an associate member

The Caribbean Community (Caricom) welcomed Curacao, which is now an associate member of the regional organization. The official admission took place yesterday at the opening of the 47th ordinary meeting of Caricom, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of this group of Caribbean countries.

"On behalf of the people and government of Curacao, I hereby wish to express our best wishes for the continued advancement and prosperity of Caricom", said Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas at the ceremony.

During the meeting in Grenada, Caricom members will discuss agribusiness, food, the climate crisis, self-sustaining development, imports and other issues of interest to the subregion. Foreign policy, the Caribbean Single Market and Economy engagement with partners in the social sector and the effects of Hurricane Beryl in the area are also on the agenda for discussion at the three-day meeting.

The debates will also focus on the Multilateral Air Services Agreement, which provides a single air transport market in the region. The opening ceremony of the meeting took place at Saint George's University, and the Order of the Political Entity was also awarded to former Guyanese rugby player Clive Lloyd and Jamaican Roderick Rainford.
