The president of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (Parliament), Esteban Lazo, led the commemoration of Cuba-Caricom Day this Friday, in the capital's Caribbean Heroes Park.
The activity celebrated the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between this Antillean nation and the first four Caribbean countries (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Barbados). The leader of the Cuban legislature laid a wreath at the monument in honor of personalities who symbolize the solidarity and courage of the Caribbean peoples in their struggle against colonialism and for independence.
He told those present that the ties between his country and the member states of the Caribbean Community have always been characterized by affection, admiration, mutual respect, brotherhood, solidarity and cooperation. As an important milestone in these more than five decades of ties, he highlighted the fact of having contributed to the professional training of more than six thousand Caribbean students who today put their knowledge and talent to work for the development of their respective nations.
Lazo thanked all the Caribbean brothers for their support of the Cuban Resolution condemning the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States. The chargé d'affaires a.i. of Trinidad and Tobago in Cuba, Cindy Shivani Maharaj, stated that 52 years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the first four Caribbean nations with the Greater Antilles, this fact remains the most precious legacy. She reiterated her solidarity with Cuba in the face of the damage caused by hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, and by the earthquakes; at the same time she wished success in the recovery.
She confirmed that, despite its own challenges, this Caribbean nation continues to be a pillar of strength and an inspiration, not only for the small countries of the Caribbean Community, but for the entire world.
Also participating in the event were the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josefina Vidal, and the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González, among other directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Cuba.
