Antigua and Barbuda is strategically located at the northeastern tip of the Caribbean archipelago, with African descendants comprising the predominant population with a mixture of other ethnic groups. The islands were settled and colonized by the British (1632-1981) and gained its independence on the 1st of November, 1981.

During the period of colonization, chattel slavery dominated its economic and social existence and even after Emancipation (1834) the mono-crop sugar economy continued, which eventually morphed into a tourism based economy from the late 1950-60’s. Tourism now accounts for well over 60% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and livelihood.

The islands are known for their natural beauty (with 365 white and pink sand beaches) and their hospitable and friendly people form the backdrop of its tourism appeal, and an appreciable standard of living (Nominal GDP Per capita $21,010 USD). Other significant contributors to the national economy are its offshore banking sector, investment banking services, agricultural production and its highly literate and educated people.

Antigua y Barbuda está estratégicamente ubicada en el extremo noreste del archipiélago caribeño, habitada por descendientes africanos que comprenden la población predominante, con mezcla de otros grupos étnicos. Las islas fueron colonizadas por los británicos en 1632 y obtuvieron su independencia el 1ro de noviembre de 1981.

Durante la colonia, la esclavitud dominaba su existencia económica y social e, incluso, después de la emancipación (1834) el monocultivo del azúcar continuó y desde finales de 1950-60, se transformó en una economía basada en el turismo, que ahora representa más del 60 % de su Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) y su sustento.

La belleza natural de la isla (conocida por sus 365 playas de arenas blancas y rosadas) y su gente hospitalaria y amigable forman el telón de fondo de su atractivo turístico y de un nivel de vida apreciable (con PIB nominal per cápita de $21,010 USD). Otros contribuyentes importantes a la economía nacional son el sector bancario extraterritorial, los servicios de banca de inversión, la producción agrícola y un pueblo altamente alfabetizado y educado.
