Grenada has been an integral and active part of the Caribbean Community of CARICOM since May 1974, when it gained independence. It was the host country of the Tenth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government, where the Grand Anse Declaration was signed in July 1989.

It is the country of the late great Sir Alister McIntire, a distinguished Caribbean academic who served as Secretary General of CARICOM in the period from 1974 to 1977. The country boasts of being one of the most hospitable in the world. In addition, its low crime rate ranks it as one of the safest places to travel on the entire planet.
