Graduated as a graphic designer, Daniel Ventura Timonchuk dedicates himself to his profession as a freelance, and for the last three years has developed his work as a photographer as a hobby. The knowledge gained during the photography course taught by Alberto (El Chino) Arcos, the independent study based on Internet tutorials and the practice provided by daily work is the fundamental tuition for this young man.

Design and photography: two passions of Daniel Ventura

Daniel has developed his work as a photographer progressively and gradually. He started presenting work in the third round of the contest Artistic Lens, motivated by Gerardo de la Llera (coordinator of the event), where he won the prize awarded by the Creative School of Havana, and he later formed part of the collective exhibition “Profiles” in the Faculty of Economics and Geography of the University of Havana during the XIII Biennial this year. His most recent participation in the V edition of Artistic Lens earned him the First Prize. With the winning piece, Nave ISCS, of the Church of Santa Catalina of Siena, he establishes a link through the name with the fantasy of space; the title of the snapshot itself is associated with journeys towards outer space, and if carefully observed, the similarities in the forms are distinguished. Similarly, it shows how interesting an image is visually when it can be flipped without losing its sense, due to the benefits offered by compositional symmetry. Other works also show balance and sensory stability, such as Botones, En Vuelo, Escuadras, Paralelas y Tragaluz. All of them also concur in one point: Ventura’s fascination with geometric bodies and architecture. On the other hand, when you look at his portfolio, you can see the inclination for the style of low-key photography, based on making the figure that you want to represent or star more prominent. Counterpoint and Cells are two examples of this. Meanwhile, light prevails as a trigger to increase the expressive values in the case of M, where, in addition, the semiotic game established by the title, implies obvious and covert readings at the same time, in this case located in the structure of the photographed building itself.

A lover of the art of cameras and buildings, majestic and purely functional, Daniel Ventura is transformed. Graphic designer by training, he approaches photography with sturdy steps, and demonstrates that the knowledge of the Instituto Superior de Diseño (ISDi) strengthens him, adds value to his work, and helps him find the cornerstones of his calling within the followers of the artistic lens.
