With several hundred intellectuals attending the event and as much as many thousands visiting its diferent venues, the 22nd International Book Fair started in Havana on February 14, 2013.
Beginning at the Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, an 18th century Spanish construction, it spreads east and west of the capital to all provinces and many municipalities. The book fair ends in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba. It first took place in 1982, and occurred every two years until 2000 when it became an annual tradition.
The high walls of El Morro and La Cabana, which offer a spectacular view of Havana`s bay, house a giant celebration that mingles literary chitchat with an exuberant popular fair where some 6 million visitors socialise, browse for sandwiches of sizzling pork and scramble for novels, essays and scientific tomes.
