East of Havana, just 10 minutes from the capital's historic centre, the University of Havana's Prep School for Medical Sciences (UCM-H), is the host for foreign students who come to the Island to study university level medical and related careers, either self-financed or funded by their government. Its Dean, Master of Pedagogical Sciences Armando Benavides Bueno, who has been running the center for 19 years, first as a Convention Center and currently as a College Preparatory School. said that as of five years ago any foreign student can attend UCM-H and has 11 undergraduate programs and 18 high level vocational options to choose from. "Our Preparatory School delivers an intensive Spanish language training to non-hispanic students, as well as a pre-med compulsory course". Options to choose from are General Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing or one of eight careers in Health Technologies (Clinical chemistry, Hygiene and Epidemiology, Medical Imaging and Radiation Physics, Speech Therapy, Nutrition, Optometry and Optics, Health Rehabilitation and Health Information Systems). With the exception of the first option, which is a six-year program, the rest are done over five years.
Cuba as an academic destination offers not only learning or perfecting Spanish to non Hispanic students, but also internships that allow students to get a complete picture of how our national health system works. The opportunity of seeing and treating patients in real time is a yet another great advantage our institution offers, Getting to know Cuba's customs and culture is facilitated by well-organized university visits to cultural attractions such as museums and historical places, attending sporting, musical and theatrical events, some of them taking place on the University's own stages - outdoor theater - and guided visits to the most prestigious research and medical care centers in Havana.
Intercultural activities carried out by the students themselves is another interesting aspect. With regards to cultural differences, social inclusion and gender equality are key terms that describe how all the Cuban personnel treats students and these are ethical principles that all those enrolled must abide by. A highly qualified faculty ensures that the training is effective and efficient. all of which is given in well-equipped classrooms and conference rooms.
