Cuba expands joint replacement surgery

In Cuba, joint replacement surgery has been successful in treating knee and hip injuries, experts from the Frank Pais Orthopedic Scientific Complex reported on Friday.

The Deputy Director for Medical Care of the institution, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, noted that this technique, also known as arthroplasty, gives patients a new mobile joint with long-term positive results. Rodriguez highlighted the benefits of the method, which prevents post-surgery complications and reduces costs as patients' hospitalization is shorter due to a prompt recovery. 'Knee arthroplasty is one of the most common procedures in our country, as the rapid population aging leads to degenerative diseases in that joint, including severe osteoporosis,' he explained. The Cuban expert also presented the achievements in the development of minimal-access surgical techniques in the field of orthopedics. The topics are part of the debates underway at the latest scientific session of the 28th Cuban Congress on Orthopedics and Trauma, which will close on Friday in this capital.
