With rumba in the style of Muñequitos de Matanzas as center of the show, concluded successfully the 18th International Drum Fesival “Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam” that turned Havana into the world capital of percussion during the last seven days.
During the week, the most important Havana stages, among them the theater Karl Marx, the National Theater and the Cultural Center “El SDauce” offered audiences concerts and presentations of famous Cuban and foreign groups, where percussion was king.
Artists of the fame of Joachim Horsley (USA), Repercussion Chantal Simard, Robert Lepine, Luc Langlois, Aldo Mazza (Canada), Mark Guiliana, Jason Lindner, Chris Morrisey (USA), together with the Group More with Less (Más con Menos), Alain Perez and the orchestra Los Van Van. Ft. Samuel Formell, Rodney Barreto and Oliver Valdes, Adalberto Alvarez and his Son, Leonel Limonta and Black Sugar, Charanga Latina, Habana Compás Dance and Cimafunk, all from Cuba, among many others that delighted the audiences attending the shows.
Something that exceeded the audiences’ expectations was the night dedicated to Spain, special guest of the occasion, during which fans were able to enjoy a worthy tribute to “Paco de Lucia”, with the acting of El Piraña, Alain Perez and Caramelo (Flamencuba), Laura de los Angeles (Spain), Ft Compañía Irene Rodriguez and Orlando Valle (Maraca), Falete and Klimax, Jose Montaña and his Flemish project “Cantes de Ida”, Ketama with guests, ft. Klimax
As it was known during the final, most of the awards went to the participants of the hosting country, although other prizes went to participants from Chile and Japan.
According to organizers of this important Festival, the 19th Edition to be scheduled for March next year, will be dedicated to Africa.
This Festival was created to pay tribute to Guillermo Barreto, first Cuban drummer top lay Afrocuban jazz and an important figure in the island’s music world and the planet for over five decades.
