56th Anniversary of the independence of Guyana celebrated in Havana

On the occasion of commemorating next Thursday the 56th anniversary of the independence of Guyana, the diplomatic mission of the Caribbean nation in Cuba celebrated that event, which marked an important milestone in its history by ceasing to be a British colony.

During the ceremony, which took place this Monday at the Havana Club, His Excellency Abdool Halim Majeed CCH, ambassador of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in Cuba, referred to the relevance of this fact for the Guyanese people, who today work in favor of the country’s development.

He meant this occasion also serves to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Guyana and Cuba, of great importance for both peoples due to the friendship and solidarity that they profess, and expressed his certainty that these ties will continue to deepen.

Another highlight of the celebration were the words of general director of the Canadian magazine CubaPLUS, Mr. Dominic Soave, who highlighted the strong ties of friendship that unite the publication with the Guyanese people and announced the forthcoming birth of CubaPLUS-Guyana, with the collaboration of Prensa Latina, which will address the economic, social, tourist and cultural life of that nation.

The first secretary of the embassy, Mr. Quincy Younge, who welcomed the guests, and Mr. Trevor Sadler, representative of Intercaribbean Airways, also spoke that evening. Prior to the start of the activity, those present dedicated a minute of silence to the memory of His Excellency Mr. Ricardo Alarcón, recently deceased and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the island, Ambassador to the United Nations and President of the National Assembly of Power Popular (Parliament).

The cultural part of the event was in charge of the group "Steel Band Habana" and there was also a fashion show by the multi-award-winning designer Ismael de la Caridad ansd well-known fashion coordinator Katia Gil. Also attending the ceremony were Anayancy Rodríguez, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Rodolfo González, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fernando González Llort, President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, other officials from national organizations and members of the diplomatic corps in Cuba.
