Cuba Starts UN Model Havmun 2018

The 23rd UN Model Havmun 2018 begins, a forum focused on sustainable development and its challenges, and counting with the presence of delegates from several nations.

The Aula Magna of the University of Havana hosted the inauguration of the event scheduled on Friday, which addresses issues related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a platform adopted in 2015 by the 193 UN Member States to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and promote harmony with the environment. In statements to Prensa Latina, Alejandro Redondo, a fourth-year law student and one of the organizers, specified that Havmun 2018 is meeting in five commissions, three in Spanish, one in English and one in French. We have participants from Nicaragua, Mexico, Germany, the United States, Angola and the United Kingdom, among other countries, said the young man who plays the role of general secretary in the model. Kinyen Chiu, who assumes the responsibility of deputy secretary general, and Alberto Garcia -the academic coordinator- commented that Havmun 2018 will allow delegates to talk through the priorities of the international community such as disarmament, sustainable tourism, human rights and the migrants. Gender issues will also be analyzed, in particular femicide, the rights of the occupied people of Palestine and multilateralism, they stressed. Chiu anticipated that on the final day of the forum statements will be approved. Havmun represents an enriching experience for students from Cuba and other countries, when dealing with the operation of the main multilateral organization on the planet. In its 23rd edition, the model is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 290th anniversary of the founding of the University of Havana and the 115th anniversary of the birth of Julio Antonio Mella, a Cuban revolutionary, co-founder of the Communist Party of Cuba and the University Student Federation.
