Cuba’s aging population will reach 36 percent by 2040, according to provincial population projections presented on Tuesday by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).
The study further projects that within 15 years, the population of the Caribbean nation will shrink to approximately 8.38 million inhabitants.
"Having this demographic projection is strategic, as ongoing economic measures and development projects cannot be implemented without knowing the population the country currently has and will have in the future," noted Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga, Deputy Head of ONEI.
In this regard, Alfonso Fraga called for these projections to be widely disseminated and utilized daily across government and institutional management.
The presentation of this forward-looking analysis was part of a scientific conference celebrating Statistical Worker's Day. In the demographic session, innovative methods were also introduced to estimate the results of the National Employment Survey (ENO) without field data collection, yielding resource savings and faster data processing.
The event was also dedicated to analyzing the modernization of the national statistical system, emphasizing automation, the use of artificial intelligence, and new digital communication strategies. Strategic communication challenges aimed at making official statistics more accessible to citizens through digital platforms were also addressed.
Executives and specialists from the agency shared experiences on implementing the Executive Dashboard for economic statistics. Additionally, a proposal to improve the data collection system was presented—based on the experience of the Plaza de la Revolución municipal office—aiming to optimize the quality and timeliness of primary data.
In her closing remarks, the Head of ONEI, Juana María Pantoja Hernández, recognized the dedication of statistical workers and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to continuous process improvement, information transparency, and the essential role of statistics as a key input for national decision-making.
