Cuba's National Center of Bio-Preparations (BioCen) has developed the first carrier destined to collect and transfer nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal clinical samples from patients to diagnose Covid-19, Granma newspaper reported on Tuesday.

This carrier enables the adequate preservation of the tests, from the moment those samples are collected to their processing by PCR tests in real-time in the different molecular biology laboratories in Cuba.

Previously, the Cuban Neuroscience Center had developed a swab to collect samples, with which, along with the test carrier, Cuba completes a package of tools to diagnose SARS-CoV-2, a pathogen causing Covid-19.

Marilyn Diaz, BioCen researcher and main author of the aforementioned innovation, said that this carrier provides technological sovereignty and replaces imports. Similar items are sold in the international market at high prices.

BioCen intends to develop about 10,000 daily carriers, Diaz said.

The development of this innovation is the result of the collaboration between BioCen and the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine in Cuba, Granma states.
