Eusebio Leal, historian of the city, died in Havana

Eusebio Leal, historian of the Cuban capital, died this Friday from a painful illness. In the next few hours, details of the funeral ceremony will be informed.

Born in Havana on September 11, 1942, this prominent Cuban intellectual dedicated his life’s work to highlighting the historical and cultural values of his country and, especially, of his city for which he spared no effort or time during the over 4 decades he served as city historian.

Doctor in Historical Science and Master in Archaeological Science and in Studies on Latin America and the Caribbean, City Historian and Director of the World Heritage Restoration Program are some, perhaps the main ones, of the many positions Dr. Leal held to his credit.

Havana was the fundamental reason for his work and it is important to note that his work was particularly exulted for leading the way in the restoration works of Havana’s Historic Center, declared World Heritage Site by the United Nations Organization for Science and Culture, UNESCO, in 1982.

His broad endorsement as a member of different cultural institutions, universities and other organizations of multiple countries in America, Asia and Europe.

In particular, his outstanding work as a teacher and lecturer and his extensive knowledge of history and museology place him at a top place in historical sciences worldwide.

During his life he was creditor of over a hundred decorations and recognitions for his work at the national and international level, which demonstrates the dedication of this eminent Cuban to the preservation and defense of the traditions of his country.

With his departure, Cuba and, why not, Latin America and the world lose a great son, but his mark will remain forever on every street, in every house and on every stone of his beloved Old Havana.

It is important to remember one of his recent speeches, about the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of San Cristóbal de la Habana, in the Castillo de Atarés when he said "Excuse me that I had to sit a little, because I'm a little tired; but fatigue is not the result of what has not been able to beat me or defeat me, it is that I have been walking for a long time, many decades ago, many centuries ago"..."The real mystery is that I lived centuries ago in other bodies and I was here when the castle was built. Thank you very much".

Surely, all Havana residents are certain that Eusebio Leal will continue to accompany them forever in each work and at every important moment of the Cuban capital. Condolences to your family and friends.
