Guyana's President, Irfaan Ali, acknowledged that the presence of Cuban health workers is an essential part of the Caribbean health system.
Ali commented on a meeting last Friday between regional leaders to discuss the recent accusation by U.S. authorities of alleged labor trafficking in the hiring of Cuban doctors.
The president explained that Guyana, along with the Caribbean Community countries, agreed on the need to clarify this matter with U.S. authorities, including the decision to restrict visas for authorities who favor Cuban cooperation. "I don't see the possibility of abandoning Cuba on this issue," the Caribbean leader stated, suggesting that the United States is wrong in its argument about labor trafficking in the work of the island's medical brigades.
The president acknowledged the complex situation in Guyana and the region regarding human resources in health, which highlights the role of the Cuban medical presence in the pursuit of high levels of healthcare.
