Guyana’s 59th Independence Anniversary Celebrated in Cuba

On Monday, the 59th anniversary of the independence of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana was commemorated with an artistic and cultural evening, attended by the Ambassador of Guyana to Cuba, His Excellency Mr. Halim Majeed.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Mr. Majeed expressed gratitude to those present and highlighted the significance of independence for his country by quoting Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali: “We are no longer a nation seeking development. We are a nation moving rapidly to improve it, ensuring that no one is left behind.”

The event, held at the salons of Havana’s Meliá Cohiba Hotel, was attended by Cuba’s Minister of Agriculture, Ydael Pérez Brito, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX), and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba.

After years of struggle, Great Britain recognized the independence of this Caribbean nation on May 26, 1966, within the Commonwealth of Nations, after which it was known as the Republic of Guyana. In 1970, the country adopted its current name, the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
