Latin Music Institute (LMI) recognizes the work of the Drum Festival

The ILM decorated this Sunday the Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam Drum Festival with a plaque accrediting it as an Event of Continental Excellence for the work carried out over two decades in favor of music.

This recognition, which could not be delivered when it was planned in 2020 due to the pandemic, is given for the first time and is granted to cultural events that have been established for at least fifteen years, which, in addition to concerts with a high popular impact, include workshops, competences and the presence of children in it.

The award was presented by Daniel Martín Subiaut, president of ILM, to Giraldo Piloto Barreto, who heads the event's organizing committee, during the closing ceremony of the great percussion festival, which was staged at  the popular “Piragua” in theHavana seawalk.According to Martín Subiat, without a doubt, this festival held in the Caribbean, 22 years old, more than meets these conditions.

The ILM plans to deliver this award on an annual basis, by country. The next e would take place in Mexico, in the coming October, as well as in Barcelona before the end of the current year.

Emerged in the year 2000, the Fiesta del Tambor or HavanaRhythm and Dance Festival has since its inception the purpose of honoring the life and work of Guillermo Barreto -Piloto's uncle-, who was one of the best drummers in Cuba in the last century.

He founded the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music, the Los Amigos Group, instrument  quintet of “Descargas Cubanas”. He was a great music producer and exceptional musician in the broadest sense of the word.
