May of books, theater and pilgrimages

We bid farewell on the Island to a bustling month of May with events, shows and cultural days, all face-to-face and with a large influx of people.

Even at the time of the recently experienced mourning over the Saratoga fire, the art, literature and spirituality generated mitigated the great sorrow and Cubans, adults and children, enjoyed what they deserved after two years of confinement and rigour due to the pandemic.

It has been an intense and beautiful May, despite the regrets, because among other things, the extended activities of the International Book Fair of Havana, an appointment increasingly attractive and crowded, which this year had brother Mexico as the guest country.

It is not all, various Havana stages hosted relevant conclaves such as the prestigious May Theater, promoted by Casa de las Américas, with luxury guests from countries such as Colombia, Argentina, Panama... just to name a few, accompanied by Cuban groups.

In the provinces, there was no silence on the same topic at the forum, since in the southeast of Granma, tables and other popular stages also vibrated with the imprint of the Spring Theater, which has already been forging a solid tradition, with guests from other parts of the country.

If that were not enough, in the city called La Atenas de Cuba, Matanzas, the days of the Puppet Festival were full of progressive vitality, a genre in which there has been a chair for a long time and in recent years more, with the path undertaken by Teatro de las Estaciones (Theater of the Stations), directed by Rubén Darío Salazar, today in charge of the Guiñol Nacional.

Likewise, the province of Villa Clara had a memorable party with puppets and marionettes, and news was heard that in Las Tunas the stages were very active. The long-awaited Romerías de Mayo, after enthusiastic preparation, once again opened their doors and windows in their usual place: the city of Holguín.

This artistic youth festival always attracts participants from various Latin American countries and the world. Cultural programming, far from over, continues with the shows of the HavanaWorldMusic Festival, still underway. Summer is coming at full speed...
