PAHO and CARICOM Deepen Health Collaboration

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are boosting their collaboration by signing a sub-regional cooperation strategy for 2025–2029, aimed at promoting health and equity across the Caribbean.

The agreement, signed yesterday by both parties, covers the 15 CARICOM member states and creates a coordinated framework for technical cooperation in tackling shared public health issues, as reported on the regional body's website.

PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa and CARICOM Secretary-General Carla Barnett signed the document.

Barbosa is currently on a three-day official visit to Guyana, concluding Wednesday, where he met with Prime Minister Mark Phillips to discuss priorities for strengthening the country's healthcare system.

During the visit, Barbosa emphasized that the Caribbean faces distinct and interconnected public health challenges, ranging from the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases to the persistent threat of climate change, as well as the need for digital transformation and more robust, resilient health systems.

"These challenges do not stop at borders, and our solutions shouldn't either," the PAHO Director asserted.
