To fully appreciate the National Museum of Decorative Arts, one must first appreciate the mansion that houses it. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece, making a visit to the museum a true experience of "art within art."
Built between 1924 and 1927, the beautiful mansion was originally envisioned as a French-style residence. However, two Cuban architects ultimately took charge of the project, culminating in a magnificent eclectic-style estate.
The museum houses an impressive collection of decorative arts spanning from the Renaissance to the 20th century. This vast collection features furniture, ceramics, glassware, textiles, and metalwork representing diverse artistic movements and historical eras. Its extraordinary holdings comprise over 33,000 pieces, split between those on display in its sumptuous exhibition halls and those carefully preserved in storage. Among these treasures are furniture, paintings, tableware, and decor reflecting the artistic styles of the reigns of Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon III*, as well as artifacts from Eastern cultures dating from the 16th to the 21st centuries.
The ground floor, which opens into the specialized galleries, features a magnificent vestibule and a grand salon. Both spaces are highly opulent, adorned with furniture and appointments showcasing three major French design periods: Rococo, Regency, and Transition. These are arranged with an exquisite curatorial precision that commands admiration.
A defining feature of the museum is its dedication to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. Through temporary exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs, the institution actively engages the local community and fosters a deeper appreciation for the decorative arts.
