Tourism journalist, an essential profession

Tourism today constitutes one of the most important lines of the world economy, since it is among the first activities that contribute the most income to the GDP of the planet's economy.

Suffice it to say that in 2020, the tourism industry's contribution to the world's GDP was some 4.7 trillion US dollars, which included the value of goods and services produced by domestic industries, while it contributed some 270 million jobs, despite the restrictions that the pandemic caused in the commercial and labor activity of the planet.

Another important fact about the sector is that despite the health problem caused by COVID-19, almost 400 million international visitors were registered worldwide. This reflects the current importance of this sector of the economy for most countries on the planet and, in turn, the role played by journalists specializing in tourism issues in terms of promoting vacation offers.

The relevance of these professionals is such that every September 5 it was agreed four years ago to celebrate the International Day of the Tourism Journalist to honor those who are in charge of writing tourism news in print, television or digital media of interest to vacationers, address the elements and measures to be adopted in the sector to preserve the environment.

The agreement to establish this celebration arose during the Eighth Congress of Journalists and Tourism Professionals, held in the city of Iguazú, Argentina, four years ago with the approval of the World Organization of Tourism Journalism (OMPT), the Latin American Alliance of Tourist Journalists and national and local governments of America and Europe, among others.

May a big congratulations reach all the journalists who work daily in the promotion of healthy and safe tourism.
