Lovers of sport fishing, diving, sailing and just about any kind of water sports can find the unequalled opportunity to practice them with the Marlin Group on the magnificent seascapes bordering the Cuban coasts, the incomparable fine sand beaches and crystal clear waters of the Cuban Caribbean Sea.
With extensive professional experience, the Marlin Group, founded in May 2005, is the largest company of this specialty in Cuba, offering more than 300 vessels, 100 facilities and nautical bases, five international marinas and 1,100 workers skilled in everything related to sea activities, including diving instruction.
Among the activities offered by MARLIN S.A. is sport fishing where the fundamental goal is to maximally match the fisherman's skill with the escape possibilities of the prey.
This type of fishing is controlled by environmental regulations that vary according to the modality in question. It can be done from vessels for deep sea fish, those located on the shelf farther from the coast.
There are different methods for each of the modalities. Tag and release has gained strength in recent years to protect sea resources. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) and the Cuban Federation of Sport Fishing govern the activity internationally and nationally respectively.
The famous American writer and fishing enthusiast Ernest Hemingway initiated this tradition in Cuba, which has lasted more than five decades. He founded the First Marlin Fishing Tournament on May 26, 1950, based at the Havana International Nautical Club, then located at the mouth of the Cuban capital harbour.
If you wish to know the beauty and charm of Cuban seas, replete with large coral reefs, sunken ships, many species of fish and numerous scattered keys inviting you to have fun, contact the Marina Marlin.
The International “Ernest Hemingway” Marlin Fishing Tournament, the name proposed by a group of fishermen to honor the famous writer, has great world prestige and is one of the most important sports events in the year in Cuba.
The first winners of the tournament cup were the competitors of Havana's International Nautical Club winning also in 1952, 1953 and 1954.
In 1960, to better conditions, the event's venue was moved to Barlovento, today the Marina Hemingway. That event was attended by Hemingway and his wife, Mary, as well as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. Fidel Castro won the award for the highest number of points.
This was the last participation of Hemingway in this famous tournament and photos were taken to recall the event. One of the most well-known is that of the U.S. writer with Fidel Castro Ruz, commemorating the only time the two met.
The 59th International “Ernest Hemingway” Marlin Fishing Tournament will be held from May 1 to June 6, 2009.
