“I use photography to capture the spirit and emotion of special moments as authentically as possible.” This philosophy is what drives Amanda Richards in pursuing her long-standing hobby, and passion for photography.
From a simple beginning in 2009 with a basic point-andshoot camera, Amanda is self-taught and has been finetuning her skills over the years.
Her vast on-line collection of almost 30,000 photographs includes cultural and national events, local food, dance shows, landscapes, the Rupununi Rodeo, flora and fauna, and historic places.
Her photographs are highly sought after by art collectors, and by advertising agencies for use in advertisements, billboards, calendars and postcards, and are often featured in tourism events showcasing Guyana. Framed photographs can be found in several prominent offices around the country, including commercial banks, and are also often featured in exhibitions promoting Guyana globally, including shows in Germany, China and Dubai, among others.
Amanda has contributed several photographs to publications, including textbooks for use in the Caribbean, France, and Africa, and to in-flight and tourism magazines.
While landscapes as featured in this article are her favorite subjects, her first love was for flowers, with visits to gardens and parks at every opportunity.
Other specialties of hers are dance and theatre productions, and major national events such as Mashramani, the Diwali motorcade, and other cultural festivities.
The featured landscapes in this article are from Georgetown, Madewini on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, Saxacalli in Essequibo, Kamuni Creek – a tributary of the Demerara River, and the Rupununi region. The resorts featured are Splashmin’s Resort, Karanambu Lodge, and Arrow Point.
Amanda has received several awards for photography and continues to work on her skills in her spare time. “There is beauty everywhere waiting to be captured, once you are willing to take the time to stop and recognize it.”
