FACE TO FACE WITH A GIANT FROM THE PAST

FACE TO FACE WITH A GIANT FROM THE PAST

The Guyana National Museum offers a unique experience: the opportunity to see one of the largest mammals that ever lived on Earth. This is the Megatherium, a genus of giant ground sloths that inhabited South America thousands of years ago.

“Great Beast,” as its name suggests, was an extinct giant that reached 6 meters in length and 4-6 tons in weight, comparable in size to an African elephant. Its size and weight prevented it from climbing trees, forcing it to live on land.

The impressive life-size replica of the Megatherium was created from fossils discovered by miners in 1999, near Omai and Oko Creek, in the Cuyuni River (territory of Guyana).

A visit to the National Museum of Guyana is a journey into the past for nature lovers.

Faced with the imposing figure of the prehistoric giant, it is inevitable to imagine life on Earth during the Ice Age, a crucial period in the history of our planet.
