The Matanzas Jazz Festival arrived in the Athens of Cuba to stay because, despite the epidemiological situation in the country and the world, lovers of that musical genre can enjoy its fourth festival through YouTube, the channel Streaming Cuba and Cuban TV’s Canal Clave.
For two days, on April 29 and 30, fans will be delighted with concerts offered by outstanding groups from this western province, including the Matanzas Chamber Choir, the Matanzas Dixieland Club Quintet, the Bellamar Casino Orchestra, AfroCuba de Matanzas, the Atenas Brass Ensemble Quintet, Grupo Mestizaje and the wellknown Los Muñequitos de Matanzas.
On this occasion, this festival pays special tribute to Afro heritage, for being one of the influential elements common to jazz and Cuban music and is dedicated to son, on the 50th anniversary of the death of Matanzasborn Arsenio Rodríguez, to the memory of maestro Sergio Pichardo, to the 110th anniversary of the birth of maestro Armando Romeu, to the 80th birthday of maestro Chucho Valdés and to the outstanding jazzman Chick Corea, who recently passed away.
With this outstanding Jazz festival, the Athens of Cuba intends not only to place the city onto the contemporary jazz scene, but also to support UNESCO’s initiative to dedicate a day to this musical genre and its creators.
