Until now classified as a Local Monument and Natural Archaeological Site, the Majaguas Cantera Cave System, located in the Guaniguanico mountain range, in the western province of Pinar del Rio, has revealed itself as a geological enclave of extraordinary national importance. But immediately, the interests of science are preponderant if we compare with the plausible tourism projects that can generate its enigmatic galleries, subjected to exhaustive studies. Although no one rules out the interference of curious or adventurous people, nothing is suggested in these lines.
Discovered in 1962, thanks to cartographic research headed by the expert Manuel Acevedo González, from that date has aroused unprecedented interest from scholars and specialists brought together in the Martel Group, a leader in studies, as well as other entities later added: Arne Sarnusen, Guaniguanico, Pedro Borrás and Biokast.
An impressive network of galleries forms the system, the axis of which is marked by the fracture of the massif, which serves to drain the waters. Two subsystems, the 20th Anniversary and Dos Anas converge in the so-called Cave of the Giants, an important reference for the explorers and daring travelers.
Nearly 30 km of this complex network have been explored and mapped to this day, a task that not only demands audacity, but deep knowledge, resources and expertise. The definitive recommendation is not to delve into the bowels of Majaguas Canteras, no matter how much fascination it exerts, if you are not expert or an exploration led by a team of them is integrated. The decisive influence of non-native river currents has been recognized like the Majaguas, La Cantera and La Cruz streams, at the source of that formidable complex of espeluncas from its origin in the southern slate heights.
The fauna, typical of that environment, is abundant in various genres of bats, shrimp and currently, clarias have been reported. The experts have announced that they are currently carrying out the topography of the complete system. As you can see, it is a deep study and long-term that involves countless scientific projects, partial and integrative of various disciplines of knowledge.
In the natural environment where the gallery system, Majaguas Quarry, is located with classical components, it is dominated by cones and towers combined with holes in the terrain and mountains, and the average height of the mogotes is 300 to 350 m.
