The central act for the Day of National Rebellion, July 26, was held this Friday in the Plaza of the Revolution Major General Serafín Sánchez Valdivia, in the Cuban city of Santi Spíritus. In the commemoration, headed by Army General Raúl Castro, and the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, Cuban vice president, Salvador Valdés Mesa, highlighted the economic and social results of the population of Santi Spíritus, hence the choice of the province of the same name as the venue for the acts for the anniversary.

“Like all our people, the people of Santi Spíritus have known how to be, once again, at the height of their glorious history, which treasures an admirable legacy of tradition of struggle from the colonial period to the present,” said Valdés Mesa. He also added that “Sancti Spíritus had a prominent place in the war of liberation and in the dedication of its children to the Motherland and to the construction of the new society, anticipated by Fidel in the Moncada program.”

For her part, Deivy Pérez, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province, referred to the effort developed by the local population and said that “today we come here to recall the bravery of our ancestors and reaffirm in the present the commitment to the principles that have guided our heroes and martyrs, like those brave young people who took history by assault.”

The event, which included an artistic component, was also attended by the Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés, among other state and government leaders, 137 brigade members, including members of the José Martí European Brigade of Voluntary Work and Solidarity with Cuba, as well as the Juan Rius Rivera, from Puerto Rico, a Vietnamese delegation and members of the José Martí Cultural Association, from the United States and people of the province in general.
