All forms of intelligence are essential in design, experts suggest in Cuba

“We are going to learn to master artificial intelligence (AI) to take full advantage of what it offers and complement it with our own intelligences,” urged Cuban academic and designer Eviel Ramos.

He directed this thoughtful message to design students and professionals during the XII International Congress FORMA_25, which concludes this Friday and focuses on the challenges and prospects of using AI in the field. Ramos emphasized that all types of intelligence are necessary in design.

“AI is becoming indispensable; it is a tool that helps and presents challenges, but other forms of intelligence are needed to complement it,” he explained.

The dean of the Faculty of Communication Design at the Higher Institute of Industrial Design (ISDi) told Prensa Latina that without a human-centered approach to design, AI will never be able to solve the problems we face.

He pointed out that AI cannot replace human intelligence, nor can it provide the necessary elements from linguistic, interactive, marketing, communication, and production perspectives to create more socially conscious design.

FORMA_25 has been taking place at Havana’s Convention Palace since last Tuesday, with delegates from 10 countries across Latin America and Europe, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and Portugal.

At the event’s opening the day before, ISDi Rector Sergio Luis Peña explained that AI is not just a trend; rather, it is about learning to coexist with the new contributions that technology offers humanity.

“We designers are creators of this new context, and AI should not be seen as a substitute for the creativity that must come from human intelligence, working in harmony and coexistence with artificial intelligence,” he stressed.

FORMA_25’s academic program includes the XII Meeting for the Training of Design, Communication, and Arts Professionals; the IX Design and Communication Meeting; the V International Symposium on Research and Graduate Studies in Design; the VII International Forum on Diversity and Sustainable Development; and the VI International Workshop on Design – Production – Industry.
