The Cuban multi-instrumentalist Bobby Carcasses will take on responsibility for the opening of the 33 International Festival Jazz Plaza, set for January 16 – 21 this year at the Havana city, event organizers confirmed.
The Sala Avellaneda (Avellaneda Hall) of the Cuba’s National Theatre located in this capital, will be hosting of the opening gala, where the National Prize of Music 2012 will perform "a complete and varied show, in which I use all what I learned during my transition for the musical theater", the artist announced in press conference.
Carcasses, together with his new orchestra Afroswing, commented that the nocturne repertoire stands out the piece Scatmaninoff, a work compose with the assistance of the scat technique to pay tribute to the outstanding Russian composer Serguei Rachmaninoff.
Besides, he will perform one of José Antonio Méndez’s work, author of the famous bolero La gloria eres tu, and will pay to the great Dizzy Gillespie his respects with one of his most highlight piece, in this occasion accompanied by the Afrojazz ballet, among other subjects which he didn't want to announce "to expect surprises", the artist said it jokingly.
Next to the Cuba’s showman will go up on stage the American jazz musician David Amram, the string quintet Santa Cecilia and the young Cuban jazz musician Yosvany Terry, a musician of interesting and promising future inside and outside of the island.
The Carcasses’ concert was classified as a deluxe occasion by the Festival organizers who announced last December that will be the Master Chucho Valdés the entrusted of the Festival Jazz Plaza’s opening concert.
About 50 distinguished foreign artists have assured their attendance to the most important event of this genre in Cuba, among them, the Americans Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ted Nash and Joe Lovano; our country will be representing for the most remarkable exponents within the scope of jazz music.
