Canada swept the prizes of the recently concluded Great Cuba Golf Tournament by achieving the first places in categories I and II for men and women, while Cuba was awarded the prize in Gross.
Peter Whitehead was the winner in category I for men, while in category II the award went to Pierre Lemay, and the women's first place went to Marie-Josee Coutere, all Canadians.
In the Gross category (total number of hits) the trophy went to Yanet Méndez from Cuba. Both organizers and participants considered the realization of this meeting successful, since it is a reflection of the importance that the country gives to this recreational sport modality.
In this regard, the president of one of the organizing companies, Cuba Sol, Luis Martínez de Armas, highlighted the importance of the event considered as one more example in the efforts of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) to promote the diversification of the different recreational modalities.
The tournament, attended by 50 players from 10 countries, including Canada, Germany, France and Cuba, was held at the Varadero Golf Club, which meets all the necessary conditions for this type of event, since it has 18 holes , 72 pairs and 6,269 square meters, with challenging difficulties for any category of players.
The facility has previously hosted important events. In 1999 and 2000, the facility was the scene of the Grand Final of the European Challenge Tour, in which 15 of the 45 players reached the European PGA qualifying Tour Order of Merit, which gave the course the international prestige it enjoys.
They also attended the closing of the contest, which took place between the 26th and 29th of this month. Present there were the Mintur in Matanzas-Varadero, with Ibis Fernández, as well as the director of the club, José Tobar, and its main coach Pedro Klein, among other officials.
The 13th edition of this event is planned to take place from October 24 to 29, 2023, also at the Varadero Golf Club.
