With the arrival of the opening flight of Caribbean Airlines to Cuba, the capitals of both countries were connected, which will contribute to the strengthening of the bilateral relationships and a higher integration among the Caribbean countries.
The flights will have a twice a week frequency, Tuesday and Saturday, with departure in the morning from Puerto España toward Havana and return to its origin place in the afternoon.
When speaking in the welcome ceremony the ambassador from Trinidad and Tobago in Cuba, Lancelot Cowie said that the new route will made possible the development and strengthening of the cultural bonds between both countries, as well as the encouragement of trade and tourism.
On the other hand, the Air Transport Director of the Cuba Civil Aeronautic Institute pointed out that last December, 45 years of diplomatic relationships among the two countries were celebrated and, two years later, an air transport agreement was signed allowing the promotion of a transportation program, of passengers, cargo and airmail in both directions.
Likewise, the official reiterated the Cuban authorities’ will to guarantee the flight operational capacity, air navigation efficiency, aviation safety and the harmonic development of the transportation as well as the environment protection.
In her words during the ceremony, the Honorable Senator Paula Gopee-Scoon, Trinidad Tobago’s Minister for Trade and Industry referred to the CARICOM-Cuba summit held last December whose debates were focused in the development of a higher cooperation, trade and economic relationships among the parts. At the same time, she emphasized the close collaboration between the Caribbean community and the biggest island of the Antilles, characterized by its solidarity, mutual respect and directing toward aims of high social impact which embraces different sectors, among them the sport, health, education, reduction of disaster risks, culture, agriculture and the air transportation.
In the welcome ceremony they were present also the Cuba Vice Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Ileana Nuñez, Mr. S. Ronnie Mohammed, President of Caribbean Airlines, the Cuba ambassador in Trinidad Tobago, Guillermo Vazquez Moreno, Luis Cabrera the Nicaragua ambassador who is the elder statesman of the Caribbean diplomatic corps members in the Island, and a large group of Cuba and Trinidad Tobago’s civil aeronautics officials.
