Cuba advances in development of a vaccine against Covid-19

The Finlay Institute is working hard to find a Cuban vaccine against Covid-19 which, in the opinion of Dr. C. Dagmar García Rivera, director of Research at that institution, is on a hopeful path.

According to a note released on the Biocubafarma Facebook page, the Finlay Institute has been working on four vaccine candidates based on the technological platforms available for other vaccines and of those being developed, one is in an advanced phase.

Really, said the scientist, &the path is promising and laboratory results are satisfactory". The work strategy, she explained after, has been based on three fundamental pillars: the time element, the alliances, as is the case with the Center for Molecular Immunology, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana and the Civil Defense laboratory, with the aim of complementing skills and guaranteeing the advancement of vaccine candidates.

The third element of the strategy has been to conceive vaccine candidates based on Finlay's technological platforms for other vaccines that already exist in Cuba.

For his part, Dr. C. Eduardo Martínez Díaz, president of BioCubaFarma, said that achieving an effective vaccine against Covid-19 is a priority for the entire science and innovation system of the entity that heads and advances rapidly in these projects.

Despite this, he warned, although results are encouraging, each of the steps required for a project of this type will be fulfilled and, the best and most effective vaccine that we have at this time continues to be in compliance with the measures adopted by the country's Ministry of Public Health.

The Finlay Institute is a scientific organization dedicated to the research and production of human vaccines and is considered one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized centers in its field. In its almost three decades, it has developed and produced numerous vaccines, including VA-MENGOC-BC, anti-meningococcical BC, against leptospirosis, anti-tetanus and anti-diphtheria-tetanus.
