The burial of the so-called Common Position marks the birth of a new era in bilateral relationship among Cuba and the European Union (EU), that aims to boost ties on the basis of equality, reciprocity and respect.
In a deal described as historic, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, praised the deal signed with Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, at the European Council.
This is a strong statement from our side. The EU and all state members have signed today this document as a sign of the commitment of working with Cuba", said the Italian diplomat. By her side, Rodriguez stated that the agreement will contribute to further develop ties in many fields.
The infamous Common Position was adopted by the EU in 1996 and rejected by Havana due to its unilateral, interventionist, selective and discriminatory nature.
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister, Abelardo Moreno, recently stated that this unilateral policy had been overcome, as the positive evolution in recent years of ties between Cuba the EU had shown. Next for Cuba is overthrow U.S. blockade…
About that…
Mogherini was asked if relations between the EU and Cuba will be affected by the upcoming presidency of Donald Trump in the United States, and the foreign policy chief said a huge NO.
The developments in Washington that will come as of the end of January onwards will not affect in any way the relations between the European Union and Cuba," said Mogherini, in a reference to last month’s threaths from Trump to terminate the "deal" with Cuba if Havana did not make some consession to Washington.
Principles are not negotiable for Cubans, so let’s see how everything goes…
