The Cuban blind baseball team defeated Italy 2-1 today and won the gold medal in the second edition of the World Cup that was held in the city of Slough, United Kingdom.
In a match held at Farnham Park, the team led by Roberto Carmona displaced the world champions of the last event from the throne, after signing a tie with them in the group phase and demonstrating throughout the tournament the quality of this sport in the Caribbean nation.
The day before, the Cubans, who made their debut in these competitions, beat the British hosts 5-0 in the semifinals, after defeating the Netherlands in their match with a score of 8-1 and China with a final score of 8-0. In this final duel, after each team scored a run at the start of the match, they reached the fourth inning together, where the Caribbean team scored the decisive run thanks to two consecutive singles and a connection by Maikel Barroso that drove a teammate to the plate.
In the early game, Pakistan imposed its favoritism and defeated the locals from Great Britain 6-0 to take the bronze medal. This Cup was organized by the British Baseball Federation and sponsored by the World Baseball and Softball Confederation and its objective was to provide a platform for visually impaired athletes to show their talent at the highest level.
