Cuba and the wonder of its landscapes

Summary: Cuba is a small Caribbean island with magnificent landscapes that attract every tourist who comes to this destination and even its inhabitants, since the beauty of its flora and fauna cannot go unnoticed by those who manage to travel around the island.

This article aims to make known some of the most beautiful places in the largest of the Antilles. Although it is true that making a list of the most beautiful landscapes in Cuba is truly difficult due to the variety and quantity of settings, it is possible to point out those that have been most attractive to visitors.

Cuba has many wonders, which are currently not unknown to foreign and local tourists, and their opinions count for the guides, collaborators in this proposed list. It is good to consider that 14 National Parks, six Biosphere Reserves, six Ramsar Sites, two Natural World Heritage Sites, and 28 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) appear in the landscape of this archipelago.

In these suggestions, we have taken into account environmental protection, natural beauty and colour, possibilities for visits, attractions and programmes. If we consider the subject of nature trips, we can easily mark Baracoa, in the far east of Cuba, and the Sierra del Escambray, in the centre of the country, as the most significant and beautiful, due to their fantastic landscape and greenery.

On the other hand, the variety in the western province of Pinar del Río shows trails of great interest, where adventure and agrotourism are mixed. We cannot leave aside the urban landscape of Old Havana, which together with the Varadero resort are the two most visited and most popular recreational centres for travellers.

We will order the list from a geographical point of view, from west to east, and not in terms of predominance as a landscape. We begin with the most western provinces: Pinar del Río is a magical region. Ideal for nature-related walks, this is an area where green stands out above any other color.

For Cubans, in addition to being the westernmost province on the island, it symbolizes the homeland of the best tobacco in the world, where the leaves for the wrapper of Habano cigars are harvested, a task that the expert farmers of this true natural jewel are passionate about.

A first stopover could well be Cayo Levisa, located 27 kilometers from La Palma, in the north of Pinar del Río. To reach this place, three nautical miles from the mainland, you must leave from the Palma Rubia pier. Once you reach Cayo Levisa, the traveler finds four kilometers of virgin beaches, with fine white sand, bathed by the Atlantic.
