Cuban Long Jumper Echevarria Wins Gold in World Indoor Championship

Cuban long jumpwer, Juan Miguel Echevarria, won gold at the World Indoor Championship being held in Birmingham, United Kingdom, setting a personal record and best mark of the year with 8.46 meters.

Echevarria, 19, gave his country and Latin America the first gold medal at the British competition to follow the lead of his compatriot Ivan Pedroso, who conquered six crowns in universal indoor meets.

This Friday the Antillean left behind South African Luvo Manyonga, who won silver with a jump of 8.44 meters and U.S. athlete Marquis Dendy, bronze with 8.42 meters.

For her part, Cuban athlete Yorgelis Rodriguez won bronze in pentathlon with a total of 4637 points, national record and escorted British Katarina Johnson-Thompson, at the podium who took the gold with 4750 units and Austrian Ivona Dadic who scored 4700 points for the silver medal.

The two medals in the second day of the world indoor championship, put Cuba second at the medal table, at least for now.
