The molecular biology laboratory being built in this central province, scheduled to be inaugurated in the first quarter, will have the capacity to process 1,000 PCR samples per day, experts said today.
Manuel Rivero, provincial health director, told Prensa Latina that the laboratory is being built in a facility of the University of Medical Sciences and will be one of the most modern in the country.
According to the schedule, he said, it will start operating next month, by providing greater autonomy in the diagnosis of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, tests that have been carried out so far in Villa Clara, at the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine and in other centers in the national territory.
The director explained that the use of new technologies will allow improving epidemiological surveillance by favoring research related to other programs, such as oncology and hereditary diseases.
Rivero added that the civil work is more than 50 percent complete, with most of the technological equipment, while 25 specialists -four doctors and 21 microbiology graduates- are being trained in the laboratories of the neighboring provinces of Camagüey and Ciego de Avila.
The modern laboratory will be part of the national network of this type of units located in western, central and eastern Cuba, whose main mission is to reinforce sanitary surveillance and biosecurity, the source stressed.
