Approaching its 12th anniversary, the Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC) remains one of Havana’s — and arguably the country’s — most appealing cultural centers, bringing together a wide range of cultural expressions suitable for all generations.
Opened on February 13, 2014, with a concert by renowned troubadour and poet Silvio Rodríguez, the FAC has since amassed significant recognition for its outstanding work, including being included by the U.S. magazine Time in its celebrated annual guide of the 100 best places in the world in 2019, as well as receiving nine nominations for the prestigious World Travel Awards, which honor excellence in the global tourism industry.
Music, film, dance, visual arts, photography, fashion, architecture, design, performance, video art, theater, literature, new technologies, academic exchanges and community projects all converge in this space, housed in the former and well-known El Cocinero oil factory in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood — a place that now “manufactures” the best of contemporary Cuban art.
The creator of this original venue, X Alfonso, has noted that the FAC offers “a bold, less tourist-oriented and commercial view of Cuban culture; a living place, a space for creative freedom and experimentation.”
In mid-2010 the project was located at the Pabexpo fairgrounds, and in 2014 it moved permanently to its current site, featuring a modern, pleasant interior design that functions across each of the sections hosting different cultural strands, allowing visitors to pass from one creative universe to another without leaving the FAC.
