Father's Day, an unavoidable celebration

Parents' Day is one of the most endearing celebrations in Cuba, along with those dedicated  to mothers and children.

The truth is that everything related to feelings and family takes on enormous importance in souls as ardent and sensitive as those of the island's inhabitants, always animated by the lineage of a Latin culture, as they say.

In many different ways, the family and society celebrate, honor or remember the Paterfamilias, almost always the object of well-founded veneration, both in good and bad times. Do not play with that. No matter the contingencies and harshness imposed by the current times, after finally gaining control over the Covid-19 pandemic and the jams of a hard-locked economy, there will never be a lack of visits, the affectionate family reunion, whether it is with a few drinks, dinners or lunches happily shared, gifts from the heart and trips to places of entertainment.

It could be said that all or almost all make an effort not to fail the "puro", as the father is named in popular language, while the mother is the "pura", a test of the highest valuation. And the customs are not forgotten, because there is no lack of visits of remembrance and gratitude to the cemeteries where so many sacred remains rest.

As you can see, it is a very intimate celebration, born from the depths of society, for which each family allocates space and care. Although at the institutional level there is a marked interest in encouraging values and feelings towards parents and older adults, from an education that advocates such principles. This year in Cuba an interesting social process is being carried out that involves the analysis and participation of all to prepare a new Family Code, almost completed, after a massive popular consultation.

Not only jurists have participated in the preparation of the proposed official document, but also other academics, including psychologists, demographers, historians and educators. The people have been consulted on several occasions and from this broad participation modifications of what will be the final text have been born. We are sure that Cuban families, in all their diversity, and parents among them, will feel protected by the new legislation.
