With a posthumous tribute to the renowned Cuban stained glass artist Rosa María de la Terga, the opening day of the 21st FIART 2017 International Handicraft Fair was held at the Pabexpo site in Havana, which will run until December 17. With more than four decades of an uninterrupted career dedicated to the cultivation and rescue of stained glass, we wanted to pay tribute to La Terga, one of its most virtuous worshipers, said in the opening remarks Arturo Valdés, president of the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets. From his praiseworthy work, he stressed, countless works are witnessed throughout the island, creations in which, the use of color and elements of tropical flora and fauna function as an indisputable hallmark. For these reasons, contemporary Cuban glassmaking owes its revitalization and future results to the teacher Rosa María, of whom she finds, thanks to her relatives, an important sample at FIART. Under the premise of Art, Utility and Trade, the Fair is dedicated to the manifestation of stained glass, to the province of Santiago de Cuba, and to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, on the first anniversary of his physical departure, said Valdés. The Pabexpo fairground, in the west of the capital, hosts the event, which is part of the celebrations of the Ibero-American Year of Crafts. The day was also the scene to deliver the Recognition for the work of life to the creators Jorge Luis Gil, Gregorio Jorge and Maura del Carmen Pineda. The Minister of Culture of Cuba, Abel Prieto, the President of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, Miguel Barnet, among other cultural personalities were present at the inauguration. For 12 days craftsmen from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Spain, China, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay and Cuba, among other nations, will show the public the most representative of their handmade creations.
