International Habano Festival Opens in Havana

Atended by some 1,200 participants from 70 countries, was inaugurated Monday, February 18, the 21st International Habano Festival, considered the most important event of traders, harvester, aficionados and, in general, persons linked to Premier cigars in the world.

  In a press conference, Ernesto Gonzalez, Marketing Executive Director of Corporacion Habanos S.A. said the trade fair, one of the activities of the festival, has this year an expo with some 227 exhibitors of 12 countries, among which are Spain, Germany, Italy, China, Panama and Cuba, which represent 20 percent more than last year.

  The program of this important event of Habano lovers, also includes  presentations of new cigar bands of recognized brands Trinidad, Hoyo de Monterrey and San Cristobal de La Habana; visits to tobacco plantations of Pinar del Rio, in western Cuba and cigar factories, conferences and master lectures, seminars, contests, tasting and combinations or marriages, among other activities.

  This edition will render special tribute to the Cuban capital on its 500 Anniversary of its foundation, next November 16.

  Following tradition, the Festival will conclude with a gala dinner, where many humidors will be auctioned, whose money collected will be donated to Cuban health services and the closing concert will be in charge of Puerto Rican Singer Gilberto Santa Rosa.

  During last year, habano sales in the world market reached 537 million dollars, a seven percent growth rate, regardless of market difficulties.

  In the world today there are 148 Habano Houses, extending on an area of 17,814 square meters and also, some one thousand spaces of Habano specialists, among other habano-selling outlets.
