The Jazz Plaza International Festival is about to begin in Cuba

The opening concert of the International Jazz Plaza Festival, on Jan. 21, will be dedicated to the 50 years of artistic life of maestro Joaquín Betancourt, according to the event's Facebook page.

Scheduled to be held at the Martí Theater in Havana, the opening gala “Amada música” will also recognize the work of the Jazz Band for 15 years, a project directed since its foundation by the award-winning creator, winner of the 2019 National Music Award, according to the site on Facebook.

Also at the Martí Theater, on the 24th, will be the talented young pianist Rodrigo García Ameneiro, with his “Tribute to the Nueva Trova”; and in the same place, on Friday 26th will be other extraordinary interpreters of that instrument, the recognized Cubans Dayramir González and Jorge Luis Pacheco, the Swiss Manon Mullener and the American Emmet Cohen.

On that date, a tribute to the famous Cuban musician Ignacio Villa, better known as Bola de Nieve, will take place at the Covarrubias Hall of the National Theater, in this city, through the saxophone of Michel Herrera with his show “Sin Bola no hay paraíso” (Without Bola there is no paradise).

According to the organizers of Jazz Plaza, prestigious instrumentalists from different countries will arrive on the island to share their music on different stages of this city and Santiago de Cuba.

Under the slogan Pa’que flujazz a nuestro ritmo, the event will also host the International Colloquium “Leonardo Acosta in Memorian”, from January 22 to 27, the theoretical event for specialists, jazz professionals and industry professionals. The upcoming edition will pay tribute to outstanding figures of the pentagram such as Bola de Nieve, Miguelito Cuní and César “Pupy” Pedroso.
