Journalism, a selfless profession

Throughout all times, journalism has been and is a fundamental profession for the world, since its purpose is to make citizens aware of truthful and timely information to assert their rights before society and, of course, it is the main way of keep everyone informed of the events of each country and the world in general.

That is why the work of the journalist becomes essential and it is not possible to live without those men and women who, on a daily basis, even risk their lives to bring to the world everything that happens.

Wars, pandemics and many other events are known through the media press: written, television and radio and for a few years, social networks are also media. Today, September 8, it is important to remember and celebrate these professionals, because on this day, eight decades ago, Czechoslovak journalist and writer Julius Fucik was executed by the Nazis.

Fucik, whose famous work “Report at the foot of the gallows” testifies to the barbarity of Nazism. Throughout his entire existence, even in hiding, he was a fervent fighter against German fascism.

In honor of this outstanding fighter, in 1958, during the 4th Congress of the World Organization of Journalists (WOJ), held in Bucharest, Romania, September 8 was established as International Journalist's Day in honor and commemoration of his legacy.

Congratulations to all Cuban and world journalists on this day, which serves as a tribute also to those who do not spare hours of sleep and rest to send the news to all corners of the planet.
