The Karl Marx Theater in Havana

Considered the largest of its kind, from the point of view space in the country, the Karl Marx Theater, located on First Avenue and 10 in Havana, is also called “the one of the great events”, something that is due to the brightness and impact of the shows it presents.

Since its launching, from the capital repair of the old Blanquita theater, in 1975, the Karl Marx theater has been famous for the great conclaves held there and for the large-scale musical productions shown on its large stage. In its first version it had been baptized on the day of its first inauguration, on December 30, 1949, with the lavish presentation of the American show ´From Paris to New York´, by the company of Lou Walter magazines.

In 1955, it was baptized with the name Blanquita, in honor of the great love of the powerful senator who had borne the expenses of its expansion that had made it the largest in the world, they say, with more than six thousand seats.

From the beginning of the 60s, the name was changed to Charles Chaplin, held until December 17, 1975, when it was given the current name, after its general modernization. Apart from hosting national meetings of political and mass organizations, artists from the patio and foreigners have passed through its stage some very famous as the Frenchman Michel Legrand, Joan Manuel Serrat and the Markovic Yugoslav Dance Ensemble.

Starting in 1977, successive editions of the Competition of Adolfo Guzmán Music. Since 2003, the institution was given the category of Cultural Complex Karl Marx, maintaining its seal of presenting great political, social and cultural events of the country.

Hence its particular popularity within cultural life has been established, the shows seen in the theater named after the great German thinker. With more than 5,500 seats, it has received artists and creations of the most varied genres such as classical concerts, popular music, Cuban trova, comedy, tribute and celebration evenings, opening or closing of festivals such as the International and Latin American New Cinema, the National Ballet of Cuba and dance groups from another spectrum.

Nowadays, everything that is valuable and shines usually goes through Karl Marx, and that is a lot to say in a city with an intense artistic and prolific cultural life. Without being elitist, its delivery shows the quality bill, the professionalism and good taste.
