Malecon Nights

Havana's Malecón, the most famous maritime avenue in Cuba, has a seduction with the strength of a permanent treat for residents of the capital and visitors to the city, at all times of the day and time of year, but let's say that the nights, better if they are in summer, take the palms in the concurrence and the enjoyment.

Construction of the wide, six-lane road from Castillo de la Punta to the so-called Fifth Avenue tunnel in Miramar began in 1901, after previous failed projects, and reaching its final stretch almost at the cost of the first half of the XX.

In addition to being an excellent fast communication network between points in the capital, it was a project that was born out of the need for solace of the population who, since the 19th century, had wanted to expand and was fond of walks and baths in the sea, even in the harshest conditions. It grew up in an inhospitable coastline beaten by strong winds during the winter season, but even so, this road won the hearts of the people of Havana, because the first thing that was done was to build a roundabout there for toilets, later demolished, and a luxury hotel called Miramar, for vacationers.

Today the concrete wall of the current Capital Malecón and its wide surrounding sidewalks attract thousands of visitors daily at all hours, as we have already said. This chronicler believes that the cool and starry nights, with good weather in between, are the most fun and most relaxing.

It is a meeting point for lovers, friends, adventurous fishermen... In short, people of all ages with a determined commitment to enjoy the always energizing sea breeze and chat and laughter in meetings, whether casual or planned. On many occasions, it accompanies Caribbean music and cocktails or a cold beer, sold in a nearby place.

Another time with wonderful nights on the Havana Malecón is carnival time, when it comes alive with parades of floats, troupes and orchestra platforms in the surroundings. &All yours", the Malecón, as they say in these parts.
